Real Kids Want Real Music

What's a band gotta do to get its music heard these days? If it's good music, seems like aiming for tweens and younger works--even if it's kind of alternative.

On August 19, The N (as in Nickelodeon) premiered The White Stripes "My Doorbell" music video at the beginning of Girls V. Boys: Puerto Rico, episode 404.

Meanwhile, Morgan Taylor is presenting his music via a character he created named Gustafer Yellowgold. Taylor introduced him in Brooklyn and Manhattan throughout the summer. "Gustafer Yellowgold's Wide Wild World" is a half-hour live, narrated concert, including a screen on which Mr. Taylor's lyrics and fanciful illustrations are projected.

We took our daughter to experience Gustafer at the Living Room last Saturday. We each came home with a lyric stuck in our heads. For myself, it was Mint Green Bee. For Dad, it was Jump on Cake. And the kid? She keeps singing "E-E-E-Eel. You feel!"

Says a lot about us. Says a lot about kids these days. They're more confident and sophisticated than their parents.
